Once upon a time, a government to a country claimed to love that country so much that it sold the people of that country shares in a railway company they already owned.
That government then went away and a new government, that claimed to care more about the people than the old government, encouraged those people to sell their shares to the French government who a lot of people believed had several saucy pictures of people in the countries new government.
The French government, upon seeing what a cash-cow they had acquired went and spent all the money they could get hold of, and then some.
When this money all ran out, they realised they could get more simply by putting up the ticket prices of people using a railway that was not even in their own country and so would not lose them any votes were they to do so.
And that, dear reader, is why the UK is fucked today.
